Its getting harder to find niches that aren’t served already by multiple job boards. Job boards are now 25+ years old so there’s been ample time to find opportunities that need more online recruiting platforms.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t find the right niche. I have written extensively over the years about looking for hot up and coming industries like green jobs, cannabis, tech and others.
But sometimes niches can be found in old industries. Industries that are typically “behind the times” when it comes to recruiting online.
I was on a call with a client the other day who found such a niche. Though I cant say what the niche is due to confidentiality, I can tell you that it is only being served by some lame association job sites and a few older job boards that haven’t changed much over the years.
This type of opportunity has a much better chance at success because the status quo isn’t working (or isn’t working that well).
When it comes to old industries think ones like manufacturing, construction, accounting, mining, etc. A lot of them tend to be blue collar sectors. Construction is actually seeing resurgence of recruiting startups like TradeHounds among others who are taking a fresh approach to a stale job market.
And its always better if you come from that sector. Those new job board owners with “domain expertise” have an advantage over newbies who don’t. They typically have existing contacts in the industry which make it easier to get traction.
So keep an eye out for an old industry that can use a new look. Do your homework, research the competition, and try to figure out how well they are serving employers. If you think you can do a better job, go for it.
