Choosing your job board niche will be an important part of your success going forward. So I wanted to use this post to give you some ideas for selecting the right one.
The first thing you need to look at is the industry. As long as that industry is having a difficult time finding workers that is your first hurdle. Some industries are better targets than others. Manufacturing jobs are generally harder to fill than accounting jobs so you might start a board for manufacturing. Or trucking or CNA’s.
Competition is your next metric. How many other job boards exist in the industry you want to go after? The less there is the better. For example I would not start a tech job board today. There are 100+ tech job sites and platforms that already target tech workers.
I’d rather find an industry with only a few sites and look for a way to differentiate a site in that niche. Since there are not a lot of manufacturing job boards I might go after that. A site like “Northeast Manufacturing Jobs” would be a great way to enter a strong niche with little competition. Adding a regional twist to it would be a great add-on.
Or take the Cannabis industry. I already wrote about this being the next great job niche last year and now there are at least 7 sites targeting those jobs. So take the same approach. Go after “California Cannabis Jobs” with a site targeting just that state.
