Last year I was approached by people who owned the domain employment.com. They wanted me to run it. I declined, but what shocked me the most from those conversations was how much they paid for the domain. $1 million. (actually they said ‘seven figures’ so I’m guessing around that number)
That’s crazy I thought to myself.I would never have paid for a domain that had no obvious business model in what is a mature industry. Yes its a great domain but it will take anyone a long time to get that money back.
Knowing the job space as I do I’d say its worth no more than $250k. 10 years ago, it was worth a mil but those days are long gone. To me the value of a domain like that has to be closely tied to what someone is going to use it for. And they just wanted to build an aggregator like Indeed.
But beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
The most I ever paid for a domain name in this industry is $3000. I think I bought ctjobsearch.com several years ago after the site folded. I just bought it to redirect to another one of my sites at the time.
Most job domains are worth between $500 – $5000. Just tale a look at some of the prices listed on sedo.com, a domain marketplace.
And for the big one word domains read this article on the most expensive domains which sold last year. Most were in the hundreds of thousands, not millions.

When it come to industry related domains it gets more interesting. I approached socialmediajobs.com earlier this year about selling. He said he alreeady had an offer for $30k. I also had a friend who talked to owner of jobalerts.com. That guy wanted 100k.
So as you can see prices vary. It depends a lot on how badly you want it.
