Job boards may not be exciting or sexy but they are, and remain, a key part of the recruiting ecosystem. A lot of pundits like to talk down on them but they’re a primary channel for many businesses that need applicants. That will never change.
If you can build a niche audience there will be employers who want to advertise to them.
So here are my three truths about job boards.
Job Board Truth #1
Job boards have existed since the dawn of the internet and ALWAYS will exist. Monster started back in the early 90s and jobs online have become accepted and expected by today’s job seeker. Job boards make job hunting more efficient through aggregation, job alerts and as a channel for research. Without them it would be much harder to job hunt.
Job Board Truth #2
Companies will always be creating job listings and will always need a place to post them beyond their own career site. They just don’t have the reach of a typical job board. The biggest brands are he exception here but most companies don’t have the brand of players like Google and Apple which get more than enough resumes each month.
Job Board Truth #3
Job boards are generally better at marketing a job listing online. Employer have never been trained to market jobs properly. Most times an HR person or recruiter is put in charge of job advertising but they are not marketers. Job boards are better at SEO, content and building an audience.
So the next time you hear someone say job boards are “dead” show them this.
Would you add anything to this list? Let me know.
