A question I often get is if you should build your own job board instead using off the shelf software.
My answer is generally no, you shouldn’t build.
Unless…
If you have a very specific type of job board in mind with features you don’t typically find on existing software you will need to build your own. You can’t code on top of existing job board software (other than WordPress).
If you have the ability to hire a good developer who can deliver a good piece of code, go right ahead. Just be sure you can afford it and that you’ve done your homework as far as the features job seekers & employers need.
I can’t tell you how many times a client called me 6 months into a build your own project only to realize they missed a ton of features.
SaaS job board software is a tried and true way to launch your job board quickly. I usually recommend new job board owners prove a market exists for whatever niche they dive into. By utilizing off the shelf software you can find out quickly if your idea has merit. If it does you can take the next step and build your own.
Think carefully before you run out and drop $25k on a developer…
