Week after week I get calls and emails from people looking to start a job board. Not all them turn into a consulting gig but the majority do.
Today I got a call from what I would call the ideal candidate to start a job board.
They owned a web marketing agency and currently operate a news media site in a certain vertical.
Which is to say they understand internet marketing AND they already have a built in audience to show a job board to by virtue of their industry news site. (Meaning they already have built in traffic)
These are the best types of clients who should start a job board because they are already ahead of the game.
With a built in audience and internet marketing skills they should be able to make money off employers. How much will be something they have to test. It just depends on how competitive their niche is.
Now that isn’t to say you shouldn’t start a job board if you aren’t my ideal. Another variant of the example above are recruiters who have already built a reputation for themselves in a certain industry. They typically have strong networks and lists of people they can market a site to.
If you don’t have internet marketing skills or aren’t willing to learn them you will likely struggle with building an audience.
Running a job board today is running an internet business and you should be familiar with traffic building tactics such as SEO, email marketing, social media, etc in order to make a buck.
