With many of my clients being solopreneurs it’s important to have a wide variety of skill sets in order to run a successful job marketplace. But many do not, so if you fall into that category you’ll need to learn them or hire for them.
Make no mistake, running a job board is like running an internet startup.
You need to know how to build a community, how to drive traffic and how to sell to employers.
Some of the skills can be learned (which is basically how I did it) so the best skill you could possibly have is the ability to LEARN quickly. I hacked my way through job board life by becoming a voracious reader and listener of marketing content and experimenting with ways to get traffic. And things change over times so you also have to keep up with whats new because the field is constantly shifting.
So be prepared to dive into marketing skills, take a course, buy a book, do what it takes to become a good marketer. I first learned marketing in college and that is actually what my degree is in so it was a great help to me when launching my first business.
Community building requires good content skills and the ability to make content that resonates with your specific audience. When I was running an HR consulting job marketplace I made sure to hold monthly zooms to help other consultants learn from one another by holding virtual meetups.
Getting job board traffic means having lots of jobs Plus paid marketing plus SEO plus email plus social media. So learn how to do those things…Then rinse and repeat.
