I spoke to a blogger last week who was thinking about adding a job board to his site.
My answer to him was NO don’t do it.
Unless he is able to niche down his audience.
You see, general job advice blogs are not good candidates to add a job board. They have nothing to offer a potential employer that Indeed already does. If you do have any kind of audience/traffic you can however make some money with offerings beyond job postings. Here’s a few examples;
- Backfill: you could become an affiliate of Talent.com for example and provide job listings that earn you money on a cost per click (cpc) basis.
- Resumes: you could partner with orgs like TopResume who will pay you for leads around people who need a new resume.
- Ebooks: sell ebooks about job search advice using a platform like Gumroad.
- Ads: sell advertising to job boards or put Google Adsense blocks on your site.
On the call we ended up figuring out a niche for this blogger to potentially exploit. He has a decent following on social media and can leverage that to drive traffic to his site.
Starting a new general/national job board today would be an exercise in frustration. You aint gonna “out-Indeed” Indeed.
