There are 2 main benefits to this strategy.
SEO back links and perhaps some traffic.
TrendyStartups and KillerStartups are two of those sites.
I think I paid a few hundred bucks for them to feature my site.
These sites have been around for years so get some cheap exposure and get a few backlinks to help your SEO ranking.
