I’ve seen it way too often in my 20 years advising job board businesses.
Too often job board owners get complacent with their site and think traffic and sales will last forever. But this is far from the truth.
I’ve said it a thousands times.
Anyone can start a job board but few have the energy, will or dedication it takes to sustain long term success.
Chris Russell
So many job boards could have been saved IF they had come to me first before it was too late. Many business have been squandered that were once vibrant niche communities but the owners failed to keep up with marketing and building a long term community.
Any kind of online recruiting business requires a long time horizon and a dedication to growth. Thats how I succeeded with AllCountyJobs from 1999 to 2012 when I sold it. Sadly, the new owner I sold it to didn’t have a clue how to run an internet business and eventually he shut it down five years later.
Sites that succeed such as ones like JobMonkey, MacsList or VentureFizz all have one thing in common — ownership that is dedicated to the community they built.
That dedication never wavers and they are constantly keeping the sites chock full of content, enabling on social media and improving their core features on a regular basis.
Is it a grind? Sure sometimes.
But every business is, no matter if it’s a local retail store or online job board.
Keep grinding.
