The other day a client asked me how much content can move the needle when it comes to traffic.
It’s not a question that is easy to answer because it depends on a number of factors.
- Established sites that have been online for 2 years or more have a better chance at ranking in Google with new content.
- How you leverage that content on social media is also another factor.
- How much you promote that content to an internal audience is another.
First let me say that if you are starting from scratch, you need to be a content machine during your first year of operation. Content is one of the few ways you can “make your own noise” from a marketing perspective. This means blogging, podcasts, surveys, video and social posts.
If you aren’t prepared to dive into content creation then you you will have lesser chances for success. Running a job board today is an internet marketing challenge and you must be prepared for that.
Content also helps to foster community among your audience. It’s a way to bring people back to your site week after week.
SEO will take time. I use sources like Uber Suggest or Moz Pro to get keyword ideas for blog content. Its a proven strategy that works as long as you invest the time and effort into it. I have one article I did for a client that brings in over 1,000 clicks per month from google.
You’ll also need to distribute that content regularly to your social media accounts namely twitter, Facebook and linkedin. Use a tool like Dlvrit.it or Buffer to do that. Also repeat the same content every 30 days or so. (you can’t repeat content on twitter anymore).
I think traffic from content can be 25%-50% or more of your traffic after a few years. It just depends on how often you post and how optimized that content is for Google and how many people are searching for that topic. So be sure to see how many monthly searches that phrase you are targeting gets on google each month. Look for topics that have a minimum of 250 monthly searches as a general rule of thumb.
