Member Only Content. On a recent podcast job board owner and domainer Peter Askew, talked about how to set up a job board on a premium job domain. A premium domain is something like cooljobs.com which he started in March 2020. A two domain that combines a niche + the word ‘jobs’ is what I consider a premium jobs domain.
These domains bring instant credibility to your job board. I have seen many examples of these sites attract paid postings within the first month of launching. They are worth pursuing if you can afford to buy one.
NOTE: to find these types of domains check marketplaces like Flippa.com or Sedo.com
In the podcast Askew talked about seeding the site with jobs (aka backfilling)…
“And if you start seeding jobs, job boards, I’ve been enamored with for several years now. Um, and it’s, it’s one that I always encouraged folks to consider. You can find several jobs domains for per sale on Sedo, or if you just physically search a few and find, a provider and see if you can buy one for less than five grand and then find a niche that you may have some level of interest in and then consistently posts and be disciplined every single day or maybe once or twice a week to post a job and service that industry, um, through a really good keyword rich domain name.”

Its not that expensive. He once got Mechanicjobs.com for $1000 at auction
I think that the, the, the takeaway there is that you don’t need to have an awful lot of money to be able to bootstrap a good business on a good.com domain. If you’re, you know, if you get the domain, if you’re able to dive into these auctions and go through the pending the leads, go through the expiring list and get a great deal. You set, you can save yourself tens of thousands of dollars.

He’s already making money with CoolJobs, he stated in the interview;
I’ve maybe gotten less than 10 organic, uh, paid jobs submissions. I’ve recently added Google ad sense on the site. Um, and it’s making between five and 10 bucks a day just on Google AdSense. So it’s possible. My straight revenue stream might be Google AdSense focused. And then from time to time, I get physical job postings that when I, it may require me to visit a few job, uh, conferences for, uh, for ski companies for river rafters. The dude ranch has already know me. If I’m competent, I can get some paid job submissions from bleed over from ranch work. But I think that one is another one where I, if I physically make a connection to someone at a, uh, at an industry that has high turnover typically seasonal, um, where they only need, you know, zero to two years of experience and it’s in a beautiful location and an interesting nature.

Getting a good dot com domain is one of the best things you can do for your job board’s success. Keep it to 3 words or less and find something that says who you are and what niche you are in.
