I tend to get a lot of the same questions asked by my consulting clients. So I have the answers “down pat” as they say. Here’s a quick burst of some of the most common job board Q&A. The questions below come from a recent client.
1. Which job board software is best for a niche site?
I only recommend a small group of software products to new job board owners. I believe that it is important to choose an established, reputable vendor who will be around for the long term. Niche will do well with any of the following: Jobboard.io (my fav), Jobthread, SimplyPartner or any WordPress job board theme. All of these are cheap or free and the best way to get started. If you don’t have the technical resources or skill to build your own job board, these vendors van get you up and running quickly in a matter of a few hours.
If you don’t have a lot of money to get started its best to start small and build from there. Use these vendors to get your site off the ground as you can always upgrade later once your site gets more traction in the market. Start a blog around them (blog.yourjobboard.com) and get busy creating content for your niche.
2. Do we still own the data if its hosted?
All the data generated by your job board is owned by you. You can take it with you though some of the vendors like SimplyHired and Jobthread don’t have very good export options.
3. Should we use a subdomain?
You can certainly use a subdomain such as jobs.yourjobboard.com. Sometimes I create a custom homepage of my own and use a subdomain. 99tempjobs.com is a good example of this. It uses SimplyPartner as the backend. I wanted to create a better way to interface with those temp jobs so I built a homepage hosted on my own server and just created a sub domain for the rest of the site. 99tempjobs.com > search.99tempjobs.com. The more pages your site has is better in google’s eyes anyway. I could just host a SimplyPartner site on the main domain but its interface has the look of a subpage in my opinion. Its not good for use as a homepage. Jobboard.io on the other hand is much better for that.
4. How do we monetize with Indeed, SimplyHired, other aggregators?
You can make money from Indeed, SH, Juju, Jobs2Careers and other aggregators by sending them traffic. Just integhrate with their API, display their jobs and every time a job seekers clicks one of those jobs you get a few cents. For every 10,000 page views you have you can earn around $100 is the general rule of thumb.
5. What is the best email marketing software?
Sendgrid is awesome because its so cheap to use. For newsletters I use Mailchimp. For sending prospects email I use a piece of software called Atomic Mail Sender.
