Job boards are evolving. If you are starting a job board today you need to keep in mind trends in the online job market so that your site contains the latest features that job seekers expect. Here are 3 things that every new job board should have.
1. Mobile friendly/mobile apply. Most job seekers are job searching for jobs on their smartphones. So your job site needs to be mobile friendly and have a way to apply via mobile. That means using things like ‘Apply with Linkedin‘ button, connecting to dropbox, box.net etc so the user can grab a copy of their resume.
2. Social media integration. Allow employers to connect their social media accounts to their profile page so job seekers can follow them. Make those links prominent on their job descriptions. Imagine if each posting had a link to the hiring manager’s Linkedin profile? Job seekers could research who they’d be working for.
3. Backfill. This might be a controversial topic but I feel every job board should backfill from Indeed or SimplyHired. Not only will it bring in some additional revenue it offers job seekers extra jobs to see. This you are bring more “value” to their experience. This should offset the fact that once they click that job they are leaving your site but I think its important to have since no job board has all the relevant jobs anyway. Its a way to fill in holes in your own listings.
Finally don’t underestimate the value of good web design. Your new site needs to look awesome! Get a great logo. It tells employers and job seekers that your new site is worth trying!
Great info as usual, Chris (think you’re missing the word ‘board’ in the post title, though).
