So big job baords like Monster still make a couple hundred million per year. Sites like Ontargetjobs.com make a few million per year and then there’s the rest of the job board market. Established niche players that have been around for several years make six figures. The rest squeeze by with $10-25k per year.
A job board with 10,000 monthly visitors can make $1k per month on average. The ten thousand traffic number should be your goal. That number of job seekers should ensure that employers will get enough qualified applicants when they post jobs with you. To make $1k you’d need to sell 10 job postings at $99 each.
Starting a job board requires a long time horizon. Dont expect to make much money in the first year. I think a lot depends on the niche you serve. If its in an industry with hard to find people, employers are more likely to try a new site. So dont pick a niche that has lots of competitors like tech or healthcare. Think of it as a 3 year project.
You can start “micro niche” sites like ones that target a niche and location…i.e. “New York Nursing Jobs”. If you go this route you might be better off creating a larger network of site for all 50 states or top cities.
Chris, when say ‘create a larger network of sites’ for a specific niche, do you suggest using something like WP Multisite, perhaps? Or sub domains with each sub domain representing an area/ state? Or will a category for each state suffice?
When i say network you coild either use subdomains or just a collection of seperate urls. A network just links to all them from each site.
