After 10 years online any website will attract its share of links. Today I used the following Google hack “link: yoursitename.com” to see how many backlinks my biggest site has. 6300 or so.
When I first started out I spent a good deal of time asking for links. My main targets were local news sites, libraries and other local government sites and schools. If you email the webmaster of these sites a short note indicating which page of their site that your site could be linked from you will get that link more often than not. Just be sure its related somehow to your site. Town/library sites work best for regional job boards as opposed to industry specific ones.
For other types of sites like local news and real estate I suggest creating a ‘related links’ page on your site then add a link to them before you ask for a reciprocal link. Below is a page I created for one of my local sites, WestchesterCountyJobs.com.
So if you make a consistent effort to get links to your site, your backlinks will slowly start to grow. But it takes persistence and effort to get these links, in the end though a great inbound link is worth its weight in gold.
