A new member asks: I’d like to know how much time on avg is spent maintaining and marketing job boards?
Well if you go with my way, very little. I outsource my boards to other job board software vendors which means they take care of most of the servicing, maintenance and even phone calls. I keep an 800 number which I answer myself but I only get 5 calls a day on average. My total time spent on my 12 local sites is 10 hours per week. Most of that is spent on doing some proactive marketing.
I have no employees and I like it that way. I use Google Adwords to do my selling. To me they are like a virtual salesman. I’d rather have a business that is automated and runs itself than have to manage employees. Of course I’m probably limiting the potential growth of my boards by doing this but my lifestyle is more important to me than having to worry about the business side of things.
If you go with a job board software like a Jobtarget they take care of billing, customer service and upgrades to the software. All I have to do is sell/market the sites and thats it. Since I rely heavily on my existing cutomer base and AdWords for new sales, my time spent working on these aspects is minimal. I gather leads from other competitors and send some emails, answer a few daily calls and thats about it.
So the answer to your question really depends on how you structure your business. If you do hire anyone I would first get a lead generator or sales person and have them spend 40 hrs a week doing nothing but gathering leads and making calls.
Hope that helps. If you have any related questions just leave a comment and I’ll address it here.
Chris,
Thanks for your response. Outsourcing certain aspects of business to concentrate on others is smart. This was the type of answer I was looking for.
Thanks again,
